Who We Are
Hi my name is Kim and my husband Tom and I are directors of Under His Wings. We have six children with three still at home. We have a staff of volunteers and a wonderful church family that help run our pregnancy care center and a second hand store, plus the home that houses seven girls.
The need for volunteers is never-ending.
What We Do
The most important requirement for acceptance into the program is that the woman must sincerely want help and be open to the healing that is available in the relationship with Jesus Christ. The prospective “resident” must be interviewed by the director either by phone or in person. Upon arrival, the resident must carefully read the guidelines and agree to completely abide by them.
The home in Ottawa is mostly for pregnant women who have nowhere else to go. Some were homeless before they moved into the home, others have been teenagers who were kicked out of their homes when their parents found out about their pregnancies, or they have been bouncing from home to home, relying on the kindness of friends. Seven mothers and their children live at the home, rent-free. But that doesn’t mean responsibility-free. They do chores and abide by rules. There are no cell phones priveleges until they are earned, they must help with the meals, they must attend church, and they must continue to work to make a productive life.

Each mother stays less than a year. The home helps them finish their high school education, if necessary, or get their GEDs. It guides them through the college application process or helps them with interviewing skills. The mothers receive counseling once a week – twice if they’ve previously been in DCFS care – and learn how to cook and bake. They also must attend Bible study once a week. Each mother must find and pay for her own child care, and the home will help them with resources for that, as well.
We function like a home. We want them to learn family living and to know that they’re loved. The ultimate goal of the home is for the mothers to become self-sufficient.

There are three main programs.
• Maternity program: For pregnant women through delivery and 12 months after.
• New Moms program: A 12 month program designed for moms with a small infant.
• New Beginnings program: For women with a child up to 5 years old (but not in school) in need of housing.
Our History
Under His Wings Ministry (UHW) was founded in 1985
by Ken & Dixie Atkinson as an interdenominational,
all volunteer Christian organization providing help and housing
for women in need. As a non-profit ministry, we are dedicated to
helping all women in need and operate by faith using Christian
principles. In 2005, Tom and Kim Jewett assumed the position
of Executive Directors after many years of faithful service to
Under His Wings. And as it says in Revelation 21:4: “He will wipe
every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."—NIV. And Tom and Kim have seen the old order of things passing away in the years that they have been with UHW.

One has been the purchase of the Ottawa building and selling of the Morris home. They had recently been considering the possibility of also selling the Ottawa home to begin building a new and improved building. But with much prayer and consideration they have reconsidered the selling of the home at this time. They are now remodeling the existing home instead for in Proverbs 24:3 it says “Through skillful and godly Wisdom is a house (a life, a home, a family) built, and by understanding it is established (on a sound and good foundation).”—AMP.
The wisdom of God says that the timing is not right for building...it is a time of prayer and the building of understanding so that in the proper time the old order will be replaced with the newness and perfection of God. Continue to pray for Under His Wings and all the girls who come through our doors.
